Educational and Research Program in Geosrisks in HaitiThe project forms part of Geoazur’s development strategy in developing countries which specific actions are: observing, analyzing, and modeling to better apprehend the deformation processes of the lithosphere, using the threefold approach Earth – Sea – Space. Through its geodynamical and tectonic features, the Caribbean Platen forms a unique study area that faces seismic – gravitational – tsunami natural hazards together. Since 2010 Geoazur involvement in Haiti has increased both at scientific level and educational level, in partnership with the State University of Haiti. Our actions have been supported by several organizations, such as the French Research Institute for Development (IRD), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the French Embassy in Haiti and the French Conference of University Presidents (CPU).

Besides the project builds on Francophone scientific and educational partnerships, including the Geoscience research unit URGeo at the State University of Haiti (UEH), three joint research units located in France (Geoazur, Nice Sophia Antipolis; Espace-Dev, Montpellier; Geology ENS Paris), the Geoscience Montpellier branch at the Université des Antilles, the Georisk and Environment research unit at the University of Liège, and the Institute of Mechanics, Materials and Civil Engineering at the Université Catholique de Louvain.
The goal is threefold:
1/ Support and enhance the young research team URGeo at the State University of Haiti (UEH) by involving young scientists within the accompanying process implemented by IRD for “Young research team associated to IRD” (French acronym JEAI).
Today, the URGeo team focusses on three major research topics:
- Landslides processes
- Clay soil behaviors and foundation response
- Active faults and engineering seismology
2/ Create and develop a Master training program in Geoscience – Georisks within the UEH
The training program will be the backbone for skill dissemination, know-how transfer and sharing of expertise among the educational and socio-economic world. The main purpose will be to train executives, who will be expert in telluric risks in the Caribbean area and capable of taking relevant decisions to address environment and land-use planning issues.
